Our mobility policy

Traveling by Public Transport with the Shuttel card

Discover the details of the new mobility policy for using Public Transport with the Shuttel card.

Policy for commuting by Public Transport

When commuting via public transport, the University of Leiden will pay 100% of the costs. Use your Shuttel card instead of your personal public transport car. The university will covers the costs directly. It's crucial to assign a travel purpose (either "commute" or "business") to your trips. Please note that only travels in second-class is allowed.

Example

You live in The Hague and work in Leiden. Every day, you cycle 3 kilometers to The Hague Central Station, take the train to Leiden, then walk another 2 kilometers to the university.

• In the Shuttel app, you register the bike ride in The Hague. You won't receive reimbursement as it is a commute under 10 kilometers.

• At the train station, you check in with your Shuttel card. Your train journey automatically appears in the Shuttel app, which you register as "commute." The costs are settled directly with the university, regardless of the distance. This applies to all public transport forms like bus, tram, and metro.

• You register the 2 km walk in the Shuttel app. You won't be reimbursed for this either, as it's a commute under 10 kilometers. However, your input is crucial for CO2 reporting. Remember, not reimbursed walking and cycling kilometers are still green, emission-free kilometers!

Tip 1💡: Set your bike ride and walking distance as return and recurring trips. This allows you to register them with a single click in the future.

Tip 2💡: Toggle the switch for this transaction to automatically select 'commute' as the travel purpose for this trip every time.
